The Diploma in Travel and Tourism is one of a number of sector-specific Diplomas developed for 14-19 year olds. Diplomas are delivered by consortia – groups of schools and colleges that come together to share their expertise and resources.
They are available at three levels:
- Foundation – equivalent to 5 GCSEs (grades D-G)
- Higher – equivalent to 7 GCSEs (grades A* - C)
- Advanced – equivalent to 3.5 levels (grades A*-E)
Each Diploma is made up of three elements
Principal learning: revolve around a number of sector-specific themes, such as travel and tourism destinations and provides a broad overview of the key components of the sector and help develop skills and knowledge in these areas
Generic learning : functional skills such as numeracy and literacy
Additional and Specialist Learning: these could be anything from a traditional GCSE to a more specific skills such as foreign currency
14 year olds will have the opportunity to start studying on the Diploma at Foundation and Higher levels, alongside their national curriculum subjects in English, Mathematics and Science. As part of every Diploma programme, learners will also undertake a minimum period of 10 days' work experience, which will provide them with the opportunity to gain both general employability skills and more specialist sector-related knowledge.
At every level, the Diplomas will also include a project that will enable learners to develop their personal, learning ad thinking skills in the context of a theme, problem or activity of their choice.

- Retail/Travel Agency (e.g Passport and Visas, elapsed flying times, charter/scheduled/low cost airlines, time zones etc)
